Chapter 13

Brian picked up Mike, Frank, and their wives at Reagan International. Earlier in the day, Brian had picked up the moving van, which was now sitting in the driveway at the house. In the car, Frank was complaining, “I really hate flying. The TSA practically interrogates you, wanting to know where you’re going, why you’re going, how long you’ll be there, and who you’re going to see. In the meantime, only one of those idiots is scanning everyone, while the other unionized idiots stand around giving everyone dirty looks. Now, with that moron in office taking complete control, they’ve become even more arrogant. I’ve also been getting harassed by the EPA about my selling of farm equipment and the harm done to the environment by those machines. It’s like they want us to go back to using oxen and plows,” He made a growling noise.

“Now, now, honey, remember your blood pressure. You don’t want to give all them the satisfaction of you having a heart attack, do you?” asked Mary.

“No, but these government busy-bodies piss me off!”

“I know, but you need to calm down. Please take a couple of deep, slow breaths and try to relax,”

“I know how he feels,” replied Mike.

“Not you too,” complained Traci.

“Yes, me too. The Department of Agriculture and the EPA have taken over Meyers’ land, so he and his wife have been forced to move into town. It’s all in the name of protectin’ some unseen, so-called endangered animal. They’ve also taken thousands of acres from other farmers in other parts of Nebraska, and then givin’ ‘em to the corporate farms months later so they can grown more ethanol, which makes market prices involving corn, skyrocket. I also hear tell of rumors that the government has let the U.N. force people in parts of the Dakotas to stop farmin’ or usin’ land for other purposes, somethin’ about lettin’ the natural world come back to the way it was before the Europeans and Indians came to this part of the world. Now, the stock market looks like it’s gonna crash. What is this world comin’ to?”

“Maybe we’re in the end times,” suggested Traci.

“People have been sayin’ that since before we was born. How’s now any different?”

“What about Iran’s attempt at nuking Israeli cities?” I asked.

“Dunno. Maybe we should ask Pastor Hammond ‘bout that, he might know.” answered Mike.

“Yeah, he probably would.”

Their conversation ended for a time, but picked up some when the discussion came to the NFL and who might go to the Super Bowl in February. The way the season had been going, it looked like it might be the Texans against the Cowboys, which wouldn’t be the first time.

Before they were finished with emptying out the house, a blue four door Ford drove into the driveway, honking as the car came to a stop. An older black woman got out of the driver’s seat, asking, “Which one of you is Brian Atwood?”

“I am,”

“Oh, good, I’m glad I caught you before you left,” she said, glancing at the U-Haul in the driveway, “I have something for you.
